| I personally cannot accept the accusation that I am not making an effort to improve the image of the board... This is just a brutally heated discussion and getting everyone to a conclusion is just not that easy | 10:34:35 | |
| Sorry, that's not what I meant. | 10:35:03 | |
| * I personally cannot accept the accusation that I am not making an effort to improve the image of the brand... This is just a brutally heated discussion and getting everyone to a conclusion is just not that easy | 10:35:30 | |
| What I meant was that definitive statements like locking the issue, definitively saying "Reddit links stays" when that doesn't even seem to be consensus among members of the team, etc. create this impression of the team. I did not mean that I think this is what the members of the team actually personally think. | 10:39:03 | |
| (and I wanted to bring up long-term brand image because I haven't seen it given much focus in discussion so far) | 10:45:14 | |
| These ad hominem are not helpful, and only hurt members of the marketing team and sow division into the greater community. The subreddit has 25k members and many people feel welcome, receive help, and bring up the next generation of users. The same is true of the discord. People find their own space that fits them best. I don't think we should remove links to those communities because of a handful of bad actors. If you have issue with a post or user of one of those spaces, go message the moderators of that space. | 15:25:02 | |
| But that is precisely the issue, reddit is essentially unmoderated terrain. | 15:29:15 | |
| * But that is precisely the issue, /r/nixos is essentially unmoderated terrain, so there is no recourse. | 15:29:31 | |
| The moderators of r/nixos have removed posts when brought to their attention. | 15:32:26 | |
In reply to @djacu:matrix.orgIt honestly doesn't seem like that, I can go onto r/nixos and easily find >10 posts/comments with anything from personal harassment to straight up hateful comments toward minorities. The only post that I'm aware that was removed was by a reddit auto-moderation action. | 15:43:57
| And honestly, it is really bad that we are at a point where "just a few hateful comments here and there" just get's accepted like it's nothing. | 15:45:58 | |
| Like I'm personally at a point where I'm considering leaving NixOS and the (mostly) amazing community around it behind because I don't feel welcome anymore. Having to discuss something as trivial as this in such length just is saddening. | 15:48:17 | |

| Suggestion: Link to a wiki article specifically for unofficial community spaces. This does require one more click to get to reddit and Discord, but it also allows other places to be easily added by anybody | 15:50:19 | |
In reply to @janik0:matrix.orgAnd did you report those posts/comments? We cannot know what is or is not being done without communicating with the mods of that space. | 15:51:20
In reply to @janik0:matrix.orgstrawman | 15:51:28
In reply to @infinisil:matrix.orgA link to the nixos subreddit was actually removed recently from the wiki. https://wiki.nixos.org/w/index.php?title=Get_In_Touch&diff=prev&oldid=12699 | 15:52:27
| Ah, I feel like this would be a good compromise though | 15:54:32 | |
| The wiki is an official platform, and I reverted a change there that was made unilaterally, pointing to the the requirement to discuss this and sync with the decision for the homepage. | 15:59:58 | |

| So making the wiki pages unofficial again when it runs under the nixos.org domain seems wrong | 16:01:27 | |
In reply to @hexa:lossy.networkI'm sorry I am having trouble understanding this comment. What would make the wiki pages unofficial? | 16:07:43
In reply to @djacu:matrix.org
Afaik people tried reaching out to the Reddit mods in the past to talk with but they were basically ignored. | 16:32:01
In reply to @djacu:matrix.orgHow is that a strawman? Effectively by us not just accepting but promoting the reddit and the discord we accept those hateful comments. | 16:33:18
In reply to @djacu:matrix.orgI think what hexa is saying is that the wiki was unofficial before and between making them unofficial again to include links to said pages in question it is preferable to keep the wiki official. | 16:34:20

| Whether the wiki links to only official places doesn't determine whether it's official itself. And there's already a ton of unofficial links on the wiki too | 16:37:53 | |

In reply to @garbas:matrix.orgI think this is the root issue: the nixos.org website is the official homepage of the project. The Discourse and Matrix Space are the official community comms platforms. I haven't found any other Linux distro or package manager that just links to wherever whoever is talking about the project. I don't know why this is a "need". | 16:38:58
In reply to @djacu:matrix.orgI don't know how to do that without actually having an account, joining, etc. At the end of the day, I don't see why Nix needs to promote the Reddit data-harvesting / ad product. | 16:39:34
