matthewcroughan - nix.zone | If you saw how this server works, you'd understand. It's just the way it works. | 02:00:02 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | This is how corporates like to operate. | 02:00:08 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | So a company like Intel has no central chat room. They have presences in chat rooms. | 02:00:39 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | If the people in that server come to enjoy Nix, it will be great for us, because they are a hive of embedded developers that have yet to see it. | 02:01:25 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | TL;DR, I cannot shill Nix amongst embedded developers without doing that, so I don't understand what you're saying about official chatrooms. I can't just give them a link, that's illegal in this context. | 02:02:57 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | * TL;DR, I cannot shill Nix amongst embedded developers without doing that, so I don't understand what you're saying about official chatrooms. I can't just give them a link to a chatroom and tell them to come here, that's illegal in this context. | 02:03:06 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | The fragmentation of the "small community" is evidence of growth anyway. So I don't understand your aversion to it. | 02:03:39 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | Linux is fragmented, because it is huge. I don't view Nix as particularly fragmented as you do, it's clear where the official sources are, the Forums and Matrix are the clear places to go (to me). | 02:04:40 |
davidak | why not? instead give them an unofficial chat room at some random discord? | 02:04:16 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | The banner of the channel points to https://nixos.org. Your concerns are not real :P | 02:08:47 |
davidak | it gets more fragmented when you create another unofficial chat room and that will lead to worse user experience. why should they come there and not to the official ones?
isn't that obvious? | 02:09:33 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | No it is not obvious and I disagree with you. I feel as if you're just arguing for the sake of it. | 02:09:49 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | FWIW, marketing and virality aren't about stopping people from doing things. | 02:11:33 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | It's about the opposite. | 02:11:36 |
davidak | i actually don't want to argue, but feel i have to state what is obvious to me | 02:11:46 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | Right. In that case:
- There are 1000 eyes there
- I can't tell those eyes to look at Nix without complying with their setup
| 02:12:46 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | Their setup is subservers. | 02:13:13 |

matthewcroughan - nix.zone | Essentially it's a platform of its own. | 02:13:46 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | You're essentially saying you don't want Nix to be present on another platform. | 02:13:56 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | I understand why you think it's "just another chat room" but it is not at all. | 02:14:04 |
davidak | i don't know anything about that community, so it's a general statement from my side | 02:15:23 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | Indeed. I understand your concerns though, it's just that this is kind of what Discord is today. | 02:15:44 |
matthewcroughan - nix.zone | You get mega servers which have sub communities in those mega servers. | 02:15:53 |

bpiv400 | In reply to @davidak:matrix.org it's been 3 days since i got the e-mail. give me some time Sorry! Wasn't sure I had the right email -- no rush really, just wanted to make sure it didn't end up in the void | 15:11:36 |
tomberek | Thinking aloud about Nix and NixOS documentation and messaging. I imagine someone being given an electric power drill. Then shown how it can be used to build a cabinet. Then the response being, “but that’s not the kind of cabinet I want.” Or “but you also used other tools, not just the drill”. Or “I already have a hand-drill.” Or “ I have no drill bits.” Perhaps we need to communicate better what people should expect. Teaching Nix often feels more like teaching skills to build proficiency with the tool. Using Nix is like using electric power tools instead of hand-tools. | 16:31:27 |
