| hello everyone, my name is Jake Wray. I am a freelance journalist and dev based in British Columbia, Canada. I am interested in joining the Nix marketing team to work on the Nix blog and newsletter, plus whatever else I can help with. I previously joined you guys for some meetings on this subject a few years ago, but I ghosted after facing some severe health issues (I'm all good now). Apologies for the quiet exit.
I am particularly interested in making Nix more accessible to non-technical users, and I am ideally placed to bridge that gap as someone who has painstakingly learned Nix starting from a layman position with no technical background. Most Nix users come from a technical background and choose the OS because of its technical nature, but I learned to become a dev because of Nix. Before that I was just a script kiddie who messed around with Arch. Learning to configure NixOS taught me how to read code, and once I could read it, writing was just a small leap (with a little kick in the ass from ai agents/vibe coding).
I am also interested in growing the Nix community as I believe it is essential to the ongoing success of Nix. I sense a tension within the organization that comes from an over-abundance of technical skill paired with an under-abundance of soft skills, but I believe if we lean into building Nix as a community not just a software, great things will happen.
I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and get started so please let me know how I can help. jake@bitnorth.org or message me here on Matrix.
P.S. sorry for the dorky unprofessional Matrix account name lol. It was originally created as a throwaway. I'll create and use a better one.
