Suggestion: Link to a wiki article specifically for unofficial community spaces. This does require one more click to get to reddit and Discord, but it also allows other places to be easily added by anybody
A link to the nixos subreddit was actually removed recently from the wiki.

@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilAh, I feel like this would be a good compromise though15:54:32
@hexa:lossy.networkhexaThe wiki is an official platform, and I reverted a change there that was made unilaterally, pointing to the the requirement to discuss this and sync with the decision for the homepage.15:59:58

@hexa:lossy.networkhexaSo making the wiki pages unofficial again when it runs under the nixos.org domain seems wrong16:01:27

I'm sorry I am having trouble understanding this comment. What would make the wiki pages unofficial?

And did you report those posts/comments? We cannot know what is or is not being done without communicating with the mods of that space.

Afaik people tried reaching out to the Reddit mods in the past to talk with but they were basically ignored.

strawman
How is that a strawman? Effectively by us not just accepting but promoting the reddit and the discord we accept those hateful comments.

I think what hexa is saying is that the wiki was unofficial before and between making them unofficial again to include links to said pages in question it is preferable to keep the wiki official.

@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilWhether the wiki links to only official places doesn't determine whether it's official itself. And there's already a ton of unofficial links on the wiki too16:37:53

A community in the eyes of marketing is different what community is in the eyes of moderation. We need to show and will where different parts of the community are. There are definitely problems with nixos reddit, but if anybody thinks unlinking them from nixos org will solve the problem they are wrong. We have already more than half a year of evidence to support this. Unlinking to nixos reddit should not be the first step and right now new users receive more support there than anywhere else. Especially for those who are regulars on that platform.
I think this is the root issue: the nixos.org website is the official homepage of the project. The Discourse and Matrix Space are the official community comms platforms. I haven't found any other Linux distro or package manager that just links to wherever whoever is talking about the project. I don't know why this is a "need".

I don't know how to do that without actually having an account, joining, etc. At the end of the day, I don't see why Nix needs to promote the Reddit data-harvesting / ad product.

if you think there is a good wiki page to link to I will add that in my PR. I think allowing folks easy access to add more links also helps accomplish what @garbas seemingly wanted in terms of allowing folks to find wherever whoever is talking about nix easily
16:42:29
@nat418:matrix.orgnat-418I was gonna add a "PR to add more unofficial channels" but the wiki is probably lower barrier to entry and would get more use16:43:12

Reddit's business model is not relevant to this issue.
16:51:47
@paperdigits:matrix.orgmicaAs someone who has revived better help from unofficial places than official places, I understand linking reddit and discord. I don't know if I think either of those platforms are good for me, but getting help is getting help.16:55:00

I don't know in what world people are aware Nix exists but not Reddit or X. I just don't see why we need to promote these social media platforms that are already huge and well-known.
17:16:55
@nat418:matrix.orgnat-418Like why not link to a Google search with the word "nixos" in it?17:17:15
@paperdigits:matrix.orgmicaI think that has already been answered in the above discourse.17:20:05
@nat418:matrix.orgnat-418Can you link me where? I don't see it.17:20:32

This is not a representation of what we are trying to do. We do not:

  • promote reddit data-harvesting / ad product
  • promote hateful comments / users

What we strive to do is:

  • grow the Nix user base
  • advertise the awesome aspects of the nix project
  • provide avenues for people to find what they need (including help even if it is in an "unofficial" space)

There are 25k users on reddit and 2.2k on discord. People find their happy nix home there. The website exists to aggregate resources about nix that users might find useful. That's why we link.

@hexa:lossy.networkhexaare these numbers even comparable? not sure why they're getting thrown around over and over again17:33:32

Comparable to what exactly?
17:36:23
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusIt's not because you click a button to join a subreddit there's 25k people actively posting over there.17:36:48
