@raboof:matrix.orgraboofI'd love an open/selfhostable platform to allow people to 'follow' groups and get notified when we plan a new one. I looked briefly at https://mobilizon.fr/ and found it a bit confusing, but perhaps I should have a second/closer look ;)11:46:45

We’d even have budget via the NGI collaboration to polish the deployment experience

@tomberek:matrix.orgtomberek raboof: I'm still having issues with the mastodon posting from Buffer. Any ideas? 13:27:20
@raboof:matrix.orgraboofpretty weird, indeed I see failed posts from 9 days ago and just now, but the post from 5 days ago seems to have made it just fine (https://chaos.social/@nixos_org/113952112038006234)13:30:00
@raboof:matrix.orgraboofOK I think I figured it out (but you're not going to like it): it seems the buffer 'retry' functionality fails if the post was scheduled for the past. So I updated the scheduled date and then I could send the toots, https://chaos.social/@nixos_org/ 🎉13:34:28
@tomberek:matrix.orgtomberekNice! I guess that makes sense... thanks!13:35:09

@idabzo:matrix.org@idabzo:matrix.orgEventbrite is quite cool unless you have to deal with a waiting list. Lu.ma seems small and relatively new. I also know about joinmobilizon.org (funded by NLnet and NGI-0), though it's not very popular. Sometimes, organizers use Facebook events for the same purpose. I’m not sure if I can achieve anything in this regard, but I can try to find out if Meetup makes any effort to support non-profits—if you give me the green light.19:28:31
@idabzo:matrix.org@idabzo:matrix.orgoh, thanks! I've missed that :/ 19:28:50

@tomberek:matrix.orgtomberekThose were super popular at NixCon. I've also started to see them "in the wild" at other unrelated conferences as well, making it even easier to find fellow Nix fanatics. So.... yes, absolutely.04:43:58

@idabzo:matrix.org@idabzo:matrix.org[maintaining the Nix/NixOS commercial support page] Hey, I would like to raise an issue related to our Nix/NixOS webpage. We have a subpage for commercial organizations that provide professional support: https://nixos.org/community/commercial-support/ I’d like to discuss whether it makes sense to maintain this page. As you may have noticed, some parts need updating, such as outdated logos and organizations that are no longer active. Personally, I’m in favor of moving it to a more community-curated place, similar to what other communities have done—an easily editable table on GitHub that can be updated as needed (like this one: https://github.com/erkmos/haskell-companies ). While we want to give exposure to organizations active in our community and showcase that Nix/NixOS is widely used, this change would also reduce the burden of repetitive tasks on our web team. What are your thoughts?22:53:30

@djacu:matrix.orgdjacu

Overall, I'm in favor of the migration of this page to a repository as the addition/removal of a company from the website should be an SC decision.

I had thoughts, but now I have more questions than thoughts. And I think answering some of these questions can help shape what the repository looks like.

  1. What companies is this repository for?
    The commercial support page is for companies offering some sort of Nix support/teaching/consulting. In contrast, the haskell-companies repository appears to be any company that uses Haskell.

  2. Where should this repository live?
    Two possibilities I have thought of are:

    1. It could either be a nix-companies repository under the nixos organization.
    2. An entirely new nix-companies organization.
      The second feels less official and more community driven.
  3. Who owns this new repository/organization?
    No thoughts yet.

Antithesis isn't on the commercial support site but they most certainly use Nix. Should they be in the repository? 🤷

A lot of these companies have and/or continue to contribute a lot to the project. I think the haskell-companies repo is a great idea but I think the table looks terrible. I think we can do a bit better with something like the following.

<company logo> # Company Name A short blurb about the company similar to what is on the commercial support site now. ### Locations - Location 1 - Location n ### Services - Service 1 - Service n ### Links - Link 1 - Link n ### Other?
