In reply to @hexa:lossy.networkI'm sorry I am having trouble understanding this comment. What would make the wiki pages unofficial? | 16:07:43
In reply to @djacu:matrix.org
Afaik people tried reaching out to the Reddit mods in the past to talk with but they were basically ignored. | 16:32:01
In reply to @djacu:matrix.orgHow is that a strawman? Effectively by us not just accepting but promoting the reddit and the discord we accept those hateful comments. | 16:33:18
In reply to @djacu:matrix.orgI think what hexa is saying is that the wiki was unofficial before and between making them unofficial again to include links to said pages in question it is preferable to keep the wiki official. | 16:34:20
In reply to @djacu:matrix.org* I think what hexa is saying is that the wiki was unofficial before and between making it unofficial again to include links to said pages in question it is preferable to keep the wiki official. | 16:35:29
| Whether the wiki links to only official places doesn't determine whether it's official itself. And there's already a ton of unofficial links on the wiki too | 16:37:53 | |

In reply to @garbas:matrix.orgI think this is the root issue: the nixos.org website is the official homepage of the project. The Discourse and Matrix Space are the official community comms platforms. I haven't found any other Linux distro or package manager that just links to wherever whoever is talking about the project. I don't know why this is a "need". | 16:38:58
In reply to @djacu:matrix.orgI don't know how to do that without actually having an account, joining, etc. At the end of the day, I don't see why Nix needs to promote the Reddit data-harvesting / ad product. | 16:39:34
In reply to @infinisil:matrix.orgif you think there is a good wiki page to link to I will add that in my PR. I think allowing folks easy access to add more links also helps accomplish what @garbas seemingly wanted in terms of allowing folks to find wherever whoever is talking about nix easily | 16:42:29
| I was gonna add a "PR to add more unofficial channels" but the wiki is probably lower barrier to entry and would get more use | 16:43:12 | |

In reply to @nat418:matrix.orgReddit's business model is not relevant to this issue. | 16:51:47
| As someone who has revived better help from unofficial places than official places, I understand linking reddit and discord. I don't know if I think either of those platforms are good for me, but getting help is getting help. | 16:55:00 | |
In reply to @paperdigits:matrix.orgI don't know in what world people are aware Nix exists but not Reddit or X. I just don't see why we need to promote these social media platforms that are already huge and well-known. | 17:16:55
| Like why not link to a Google search with the word "nixos" in it? | 17:17:15 | |
| I think that has already been answered in the above discourse. | 17:20:05 | |
| Can you link me where? I don't see it. | 17:20:32 | |
| Redacted or Malformed Event | 17:23:03 | |
| Aw dang, thats the text not a link | 17:23:23 | |

| This is not a representation of what we are trying to do. We do not:
What we strive to do is:
There are 25k users on reddit and 2.2k on discord. People find their happy nix home there. The website exists to aggregate resources about nix that users might find useful. That's why we link. | 17:29:49
| are these numbers even comparable? not sure why they're getting thrown around over and over again | 17:33:32 | |
In reply to @hexa:lossy.networkComparable to what exactly? | 17:36:23
| It's not because you click a button to join a subreddit there's 25k people actively posting over there. | 17:36:48 | |
| Same for 2.2k users on Discord, to be fair. | 17:36:54 | |
| Same for all spaces. There aren't 1600 people in the matrix room that are active. | 17:38:29 | |
| This doesn't seem to be going anywhere good. Maybe we should take a break and enjoy what is left of Sunday. | 17:39:54 | |
| A decision has been made and is being implemented. Continuing this discussion here is not productive. The marketing team is aware of the topic. If there are further concerns, please move this to Meta/Moderation (or Meta/Marketing) on Discourse as the appropriate venue where we can apply slow mode and have more thoughtful statements. | 17:42:44 | |
In reply to @djacu:matrix.orgbetween each other … something like MAU would be comparable, total user count not so much | 20:04:06
