nat-418 | In reply to @garbas:matrix.org A community in the eyes of marketing is different what community is in the eyes of moderation. We need to show and will where different parts of the community are. There are definitely problems with nixos reddit, but if anybody thinks unlinking them from nixos org will solve the problem they are wrong. We have already more than half a year of evidence to support this. Unlinking to nixos reddit should not be the first step and right now new users receive more support there than anywhere else. Especially for those who are regulars on that platform. I think this is the root issue: the nixos.org website is the official homepage of the project. The Discourse and Matrix Space are the official community comms platforms. I haven't found any other Linux distro or package manager that just links to wherever whoever is talking about the project. I don't know why this is a "need". | 16:38:58 |
nat-418 | In reply to @djacu:matrix.org And did you report those posts/comments? We cannot know what is or is not being done without communicating with the mods of that space. I don't know how to do that without actually having an account, joining, etc. At the end of the day, I don't see why Nix needs to promote the Reddit data-harvesting / ad product. | 16:39:34 |
nat-418 | In reply to @infinisil:matrix.org Whether the wiki links to only official places doesn't determine whether it's official itself. And there's already a ton of unofficial links on the wiki if you think there is a good wiki page to link to I will add that in my PR. I think allowing folks easy access to add more links also helps accomplish what @garbas seemingly wanted in terms of allowing folks to find wherever whoever is talking about nix easily | 16:42:29 |
nat-418 | I was gonna add a "PR to add more unofficial channels" but the wiki is probably lower barrier to entry and would get more use | 16:43:12 |

Reddit's business model is not relevant to this issue. | 16:51:47 |
@paperdigits:matrix.org | As someone who has revived better help from unofficial places than official places, I understand linking reddit and discord. I don't know if I think either of those platforms are good for me, but getting help is getting help. | 16:55:00 |
nat-418 | In reply to @paperdigits:matrix.org Reddit's business model is not relevant to this issue. I don't know in what world people are aware Nix exists but not Reddit or X. I just don't see why we need to promote these social media platforms that are already huge and well-known. | 17:16:55 |
nat-418 | Like why not link to a Google search with the word "nixos" in it? | 17:17:15 |
@paperdigits:matrix.org | I think that has already been answered in the above discourse. | 17:20:05 |
nat-418 | Can you link me where? I don't see it. | 17:20:32 |
