evils | so, i'm gonna be doing a Nix intro workshop
which basically entails luring people in with cookies and then making it up as i go along
besides nixos.org/learn and zero-to-nix
are there any introductory materials you recommend point people to? | 05:03:44 |

@garbas:matrix.org | evils: I would say nix.dev is also good starting point | 11:17:55 |
@gdesforges:matrix.org | evils it might interest the documentation team that it's not obvious where to start. It could be made more evident on the NixOS web front page for instance. | 11:35:09 |
| @gabriella439:matrix.org joined the room. | 15:39:12 |
@gabriella439:matrix.org | Right now I'm working on a book called "NixOS in Production" and would like to request permission to use the NixOS logo on the cover of the book. You can see what the current cover looks like here: https://leanpub.com/nixos-in-production
I wasn't sure if this was the correct place to ask, so feel free to redirect me if necessary if someone else is in charge of the NixOS logo/trademark | 15:40:47 |

It is a current topic of discussion in the Foundation Board meetings, so I recommend reaching out to them. I can also give them a heads up. | 15:58:15 |
@gabriella439:matrix.org | What's the best way to contact them? | 15:58:44 |

evils | also, my next question is about recommendations about how to make shit up as i go along xD | 17:10:25 |

evils | basically:
any strategy recommendations on how to introduce people to nix?
which seems like a marketing thing over a documentation thing | 17:12:39 |
@linus:schreibt.jetzt | evils: it's tricky because there are so many aspects to why someone might want to use Nix, and not all of them apply to everyone. But the marketing team has put a whole lot of work into the website, and the front page of the website (of which one important task is of course to answer "Why Nix?") prominently features the three facets "Reproducible", "Declarative", and "Reliable" so that might be a good basis to work from. | 17:14:51 |
@linus:schreibt.jetzt | The "Explore" page is pretty great too | 17:15:37 |
evils | yea, my hope is i can get people to find a use case that interests them and then explain that to each | 17:15:43 |
evils | basically, i don't think i can get people interested with a specific talk, and need to address them on a per-case basis | 17:16:07 |
evils | * basically, i don't think i can get people in general interested with a specific talk, and need to address them on a per-case basis | 17:16:31 |
evils | though really the point of the workshop is to figure out an approach to teaching Nix that works xD | 17:17:05 |
@linus:schreibt.jetzt | One strategy I can think of is telling a few stories and asking people to put their hands up as they recognise things they've experienced similarly.
"At a previous job of mine, we did our development in a Vagrant box. The base image for that was built many, many years ago by a person who had long left. If something broke in yours, you would ask a colleague to export their working VM and import that yourself." (true story from my past ;) ) | 17:18:27 |
