emily | there's a bunch of posts online | 14:59:16 |
emily | e.g. https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/10gb-sfp-rj45-100m.45817/ | 15:00:01 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | I can get 10 of those transceivers for 329 quid | 15:00:03 |

The 10GBase-T module is built with the latest IC: Marvell AQR113C. Please note the 10GBase-T SFP+ module can get hot when it's working, because the IC power consumption is 2.5W. We suggest to use this product in places where the ambient temperature is below 50°C.
| 15:00:28 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | not these then | 15:00:36 |
emily | again, if it's a Marvell chip it won't be rated for 80m–100m | 15:01:17 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | Hard to tell, amazon is telling porky pies | 15:01:27 |
emily | you can just ignore the 30m ones if heat is a major concern | 15:01:28 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | ah no, you can only buy the 80m ones in bundles of 2, otherwise they downgrade you | 15:01:45 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | two transceivers cost 90 quid | 15:01:59 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | ;_; | 15:02:02 |

matthewcroughan @fosdem | nonetheless, I think it's still a good setup | 15:02:39 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | 68C for the ASF-10G2-T isn't bad though | 15:03:42 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | ah okay that's the right answer then, that reddit thread is gold! | 15:04:43 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | ASF-10G2-T runs at lower temps and autoneg works, whereas the broadcom ones don't work with autoneg | 15:05:00 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | The firmware on the broadcom chip is out of spec, so autoneg doesn't work, but forcing a specific speed does | 15:10:09 |
emily | "the broadcom ones don't work with autoneg" is not true | 15:12:57 |
emily | it's the people doing the SFP modules that fuck it up somehow | 15:13:11 |
emily | the datasheet clearly lays out that it supports everything | 15:13:17 |
emily | it's just a matter of getting an SFP module that gets it right. I know the FiberMall ones apparently do but they're pricey | 15:13:33 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | I'm a bit scared of these rando sfp+ only switches being loud and hot | 15:18:23 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | with ridiculous fans inside | 15:18:32 |
emily | I don't see why they'd be louder and hotter than something that has to pump 8 ports of 10GBASE-T built-in | 15:19:07 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | the fact that they are managed and not running FOSS annoys me | 15:24:37 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | but I guess I have no choice at this price | 15:24:47 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | I didn't expect to spend the whole day window shopping, thanks emily <3 | 15:29:07 |
emily | inb4 wait how come I can't set up VLANs with this unmanaged switch :p | 15:29:45 |
matthewcroughan @fosdem | oh true I guess that might be a possible desire | 15:30:00 |
