@emilazy:matrix.orgemilythere's a bunch of posts online14:59:16
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilye.g. https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/10gb-sfp-rj45-100m.45817/15:00:01
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemI can get 10 of those transceivers for 329 quid15:00:03
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyhttps://www.reddit.com/r/mikrotik/comments/1bq5b27/testing_10gtek_10gbaset_copper_sfps/15:00:17
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdem

The 10GBase-T module is built with the latest IC: Marvell AQR113C. Please note the 10GBase-T SFP+ module can get hot when it's working, because the IC power consumption is 2.5W. We suggest to use this product in places where the ambient temperature is below 50°C.

15:00:28
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemnot these then15:00:36
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyagain, if it's a Marvell chip it won't be rated for 80m–100m15:01:17
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemHard to tell, amazon is telling porky pies15:01:27
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyyou can just ignore the 30m ones if heat is a major concern15:01:28
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemah no, you can only buy the 80m ones in bundles of 2, otherwise they downgrade you15:01:45
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemtwo transceivers cost 90 quid15:01:59
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdem;_;15:02:02
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/10Gtek-10GBase-T-Transceiver-Compatible-Supermicro/dp/B0BRQ5MDHY15:02:12
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemnonetheless, I think it's still a good setup15:02:39
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdem68C for the ASF-10G2-T isn't bad though15:03:42
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemah okay that's the right answer then, that reddit thread is gold!15:04:43
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdem ASF-10G2-T runs at lower temps and autoneg works, whereas the broadcom ones don't work with autoneg15:05:00
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemThe firmware on the broadcom chip is out of spec, so autoneg doesn't work, but forcing a specific speed does15:10:09
@emilazy:matrix.orgemily"the broadcom ones don't work with autoneg" is not true15:12:57
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyit's the people doing the SFP modules that fuck it up somehow15:13:11
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilythe datasheet clearly lays out that it supports everything15:13:17
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyit's just a matter of getting an SFP module that gets it right. I know the FiberMall ones apparently do but they're pricey15:13:33
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemI'm a bit scared of these rando sfp+ only switches being loud and hot15:18:23
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemwith ridiculous fans inside15:18:32
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI don't see why they'd be louder and hotter than something that has to pump 8 ports of 10GBASE-T built-in15:19:07
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemthe fact that they are managed and not running FOSS annoys me15:24:37
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdembut I guess I have no choice at this price15:24:47
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdem I didn't expect to spend the whole day window shopping, thanks emily <3 15:29:07
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyinb4 wait how come I can't set up VLANs with this unmanaged switch :p15:29:45
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemoh true I guess that might be a possible desire15:30:00
